A 15-year-old Texas boy has been seriously hurt after falling from a bluff in Arkansas' Ozark Mountains, one week after an Iowa college student fell to her death in the same area.

The teen was hiking with family on Saturday when he slipped and fell about 15 feet at Mule Tail Falls, some 100 miles northwest of Little Rock, according to Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler. 

The sheriff says the boy severely injured his legs and also had facial injuries.

The accident came one week after Iowa college student Andrea Norton, 20, fell to her death in the same area at Hawksbill Crag while trying to re-position herself for the picture

Some 30 rescue personnel responded to the scene to bring the boy to safety. He was taken by helicopter to Arkansas Children's Hospital Northwest in Springdale. 

The area is on the trail to Hawksbill Crag, a scenic overlook that's popular with hikers and photographers.

Last week, 20-year-old Andrea Norton fell about 100 feet off Hawksbill Crag and died.

The environmental science major at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, was in the Ozark–St Francis National Forest on a class trip.

Norton had been trying to re-position herself for a photo when she lost her footing on a rock formation and fell.  

Several people have died in falls there in recent years, according to local authorities.  

Also known as Whitaker Point, the rocky outcrop gets its name because it resembles a hawk's bill.
