The Scarlet SpaCornwall, UK££
The spa itself is a mecca of relaxation, with candle-lit tented rooms and cocoon-like pods to relax in between treatments.
Perched on a Cornish cliff top overlooking Mawgan Porth, just outside Newquay, the Scarlet Hotel is set in one of the most beautiful settings in the UK. And the hotel makes the most of the scenery with every room overlooking the sea, even my room opens straight onto the cliff where I can sit back in the evenings and enjoy the sunset.
The hotel is also doing its bit for the environment. From rainwater harvesting and solar power all the way to the hotel's outdoor pool which uses a living reed bed to ensure a chemical-free-fresh water swim.
The Scarlet Spa offers treatments based on Ayurvedic Tri-Dosha medicine with a Cornish twist, tailored to each individual, it involves a consultation during which my personalised treatment is decided, I am told I have a "vata" imbalance and this will be treated with a neck, shoulder and head massage. The whole process is very relaxing, and I'm given every opportunity to give any input into what I do and don't like, yet the massage is performed in almost silence. Finally I was taken to a quiet room where I was helped into one of the pods and left there to relax.
Everything about the hotel, the spa and the treatments is completely calming and peaceful. The Scarlet is the perfect get-away-from-it-all spot, only a few hours away from London on the train.
