GOOD MORNING: It was supposed to just be a “schmooze and wraparty” for Geraldo Rivera and his local KCBS and N.Y. key crew at Morton’s Thursday night after he’d completed four shows here and was heading back to N.Y. But mid-meal, Bill Applegate, the station’s VP/general manager, told Rivera the campaign on California’s Prop. 187, barring illegal residents from schools and health care, is heading to an explosive finale. He said Rivera should stay here and do a special on the initiative today, the eve of the election. Rivera immediately agreed and portable phones suddenly appeared at their table as calls went out to rebuild his set on Stage 36 at CBS TV City — it had already been struck. They then recalled N.Y. crew members who were en route to the airport. And calls went out to potentially controversial candidates to talk about the proposition on the Rivera special today, 3-4 p.m. It will also air on stations in San Diego and SanFran, replacing a skedded program. Exec producer Marty Berman, among those on the phone at Morton’s, quickly set the show to be simulcast in Spanish. And Friday ayem, Rivera took off for the border to tape interviews. He told me “I hope this program will separate the hype from the hypocrisy”… Nearby all this telephonic activity at Morton’s were Paola and Mickey Schulhof, having just arrived from Sony meets in Japan and dining with Peter Guber. Schulhof was continuing to N.Y.; He enthused about the Nov. 16 private preem party for Sony’s Imax theater in the 12-screen Sony theater complex there. Following the opening of the 3D Imax pix “Into the Deep” and “The Last Buffalo” comes the spring preem of Sony Classics’ first dramatic feature for Imax in 3D, “Wings of Courage.” Schulhof praised the Jean-Jacques Annaud-directed film, which stars Val Kilmer, Tom Hulce and Elizabeth McGovern. It’s a true drama about the first airmail service in the Andes. Imax also is readying its second dramatic feature, “Across the Sea of Time”… Another interesting duo at Morton’s: Amblin TV’s topper Tony Thomopoulos and recently-returned-to-L.A. Gary Lieberthal — just renewing old friendships, they said. Gary’s already resettled in a home in Bel Air.

“VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED”– REVISITED. Universal invited Wolf Rilla, director of the 1960 MGM horror pic, to visit John Carpenter’s current “Damned” troupe on location at Point Reyes. Rilla and wife Shirley now operate the top-rated Moulin de la Camandoule hotel/restaurant in Fayence, a half-hour out of Cannes. Does Rilla miss directing? He sez he has mixed emotions. “But I’m still in show business — entertaining customers, looking after a crew, and I have a star — the chef.” He was on hand to watch a scene similar to one he directed exactly 35 years ago in a little town near MGM’s Elstree studio. Rilla says Carpenter is the perfect director to remake the movie. The original was shot in 20 days at a cost of $ 200,000, with $ 50,000 going to its star, George Sanders, “who was very easy to work with.” It was a kick for Rilla to sit by Carpenter — with an instant-replay monitor, an unheard-of gizmo in 1959. It was also a treat for his wife Shirley to meet Carpenter — she’s a fan of his 1980 movie “The Fog.” She visited its location, the lighthouse at Point Reyes. She’s also a fan of “Somewhere in Time,” which stars Christopher Reeve, who toplines the current “Village of the Damned”… Gene Hackman, short-shorn for his naval commander role in “Crimson Tide” with Denzel Washington, had to get long-haired again for an added scene on “The Quick and the Dead” with Sharon Stone … And Dennis Hopper, shave-pate’d for “Waterworld,” wigs up for a TV commercial offer … Rod Steiger segues from D.C. as a KGB operator in “Op Center” to play a 1930 cavalry officer in “Fiddler’s Green” in Australia. The show Maria’s hosting will focus on the positive impact Barney’s educational programming has on children. Maria wound taping with the popular purple dino here last week … The Kennedy Center Honors , taping Dec. 4, will air at 9 p.m. Dec. 28 on CBS. The honorees are: Kirk Douglas, Aretha Franklin. Morton Gould, Harold Prince and Pete Seeger … The Wilshire Ebell had to open up the balcony for Shecky Greene’s Nov. 11-12 dates. It’s Shecky’s welcome return to L.A. after seven years.
