If you're reading this, you made it. You've reached peak adulthood; when deciding on the best wallpapers to inject a little ~pizzazz~ into your interiors is actually exciting. Welcome, we're all friends here.

Whether you're renting and fancy trying out a removable wallpaper, or you're finally landed the keys to your own bolthole and are ready to wallpaper the whole damn place, there are plenty of high quality wallcoverings to choose from.

The best part? You don't need to be an interior design buff to select – not to mention apply – your chosen wallpaper. GLAMOUR spoke to Helen Ashmore, the Head of Design at Laura Ashley, to find out what you need to consider when choosing your wallpaper and how to actually get it on your wall: the essential questions, really.

What do you need to consider when choosing a wallpaper?

  • When choosing wallpaper it's important to consider the style of the room you will be decorating, ensuring the design will match the furniture, window treatments and flooring.
  • When deciding on a colour, refer back to the palette of the rest of the decor that will feature within the space.
  • Next, you will have to decide on the design of the wallpaper. Large scale prints are perfect to create drama and flair in your space, while small scale prints will be great to bring some colour and break up the room.
  • If you're not a pattern person, wallpapers can also be ideal for introducing an element of texture into a room. The Laura Ashley Whinfell wallpaper is designed with mica highlights to reflect the light in a contemporary yet classic neutral colour palette, whilst the Redbrook wallpaper is designed to give the illusion of wood panelling without the hard work!

How to apply wallpaper:

  • First, you will have to measure and cut the pieces to the correct length.
  • Simply apply the wallpaper paste to the wall and hang the lengths to achieve a straight and smooth finish. Tuck and trim the paper when needed.
  • Some common mistakes you should avoid: not having enough wallpaper and don't forget to unscrew fixings, only leaving the wall plugs in place.
