If there's one thing we'll never forget about the noughties, it's the truly evocative makeup looks. Think Britney Spears wearing violet eyeshadow; Mariah Carey with lashings of heavy blush, and – who could forget – Christina Aguilera's skinny brows?
While you might be forgiven for spending an hour perfecting a cut crease these days, back in early 2000 all you had to do was plunge your finger into a pot of Barry M Dazzle Dust, dab it liberally across your lids, and ta-dah! You were good to go.
The noughties were definitely an era of experimentation when it came to makeup, and – to be completely honest – we're not mad that things are slightly more refined nowadays. Glitter? Don't know her. These days it's all about effortless glamour, from stick-on beauty (Hailey Bieber approves) to wine-stained lips AKA one of the many beauty trends that's taken over TikTok in recent weeks.
Speaking of TikTok, one of the latest makeup trends that's sweeping across the app sees creators comparing modern makeup trends to the legendary noughties' looks that preceded them. The results are very impressive.
One TikTok user, @lenkalul, drew a line straight down the middle of her face to directly compare the trends. On the ‘2000s’ side, she goes for razor-thin brows, a heavy rose blush, pale blue eyeshadow (dabbed on with her fingers, obvs), over-lined lips, and heavy eyeliner.
On the ‘now’ side, she goes for a dewy base, blended contour, coiffed brows, blended eyeshadow (with an eyeshadow brush!), the sharpest winged eyeliner, and glossy lips. Take a look at the video here:
The video currently has 61.9K likes, as well as over 200 comments from people who are seriously impressed by the MUA skills. One person commented, “2000's is so beautiful !!,” while another thought, “2021 is the best makeup time,” and another wrote, “I can't get on board with 2000s eye brows.”
Another TikTok-er, Beth Michelle Zmija (@bethbeautybox), decided to compare her own makeup styles from the present day and 2009. This video had Paris Hilton in frosted eyeshadow vibes, with Beth opting for a paler base colour on the ‘2009’ side, as well as a dusting of metallic blue on her eyelids, and pale pink lips.
For the ‘2021’ side, she went for a more tanned complexion (hello, contour), thicker brows, a warmer eyeshadow, and matte lipstick. Do we also spy a cheeky reference to '90s space buns? Watch the video here:
